Eat for your Mental Wellness
by Kasey Meyer | Director of Mental Health | MSW, LICSW
The food we consume has a huge impact on mental wellness. Food can be a source of joy and connection, but it can also negatively impact our overall health.
What we put in our bodies makes a huge difference. Not just your mood but your overall health is impacted by food choices. Gut health is directly linked to our hormones. The GI track is often referred to as our “second brain” and is home to billions of bacteria that support our chemical or hormonal production. This directly feeds our bodies and our minds. If we are lacking in the “good” bacteria we can feel depleted. Two common hormones affected are Dopamine and Serotonin.
Foods that are mood-boosting:
Water
Fruits and Vegetables
Whole Grain
Lean Protein
Fish
Nuts and Legumes
Dairy
Healthy Fats
This list is full of foods that are packed with nutrients that benefit our mind and body. If we are lacking in vitamins and nutrients, we can feel a lack of energy, difficulty with memory or recall, a decrease in attention and focus, as well as we can be “hangry” (hungry and angry). We can see mood swings, headaches, migraines, and other symptoms of poor nutrition.
Foods to have in moderation or avoid all together:
Processed Foods
Processed or White Grains
Sugar and Sweets
Alcohol
Pop/Soda
Fruit/Processed Juices
These foods can also be linked to higher levels of inflammation which can lead to sleep disorders, brain and spinal cord diseases, digestive issues, among many other things we mainly try to avoid.
Learn to listen to your body and feed it foods rich in nutrients and you could see a decrease in stress, anxiety, depression, and even mood disorders. Food is not a cure-all, however, when paired with the right treatments it will make a large difference in how you feel.
